  1. I just read your Wall Street Journal article, “The Botch of the Human Body”. It was quite good. You obviously understand the efficacy of mixing geewhiz with humor! But a nonrigid S shaped spine often functions like a leafspring for bipeds and for quadrupeds. The tarsal and carpal bones in the wrist and ankle function as torque converters — a very useful piece of evolution that allows our porcelain joints to last 100 years. It is tough to replicate that function in a prosthetic leg without adding a lot of weight.
    I guess the flip side of the million miss evolutionary story is that, “The wheels of the gods grind slowly, but they grind exceeding fine.”
